I am so excited today, because I received some seeds I ordered off of Seedman.com for Mexican Maridold Papaya tree. I am anxious to get them planted. I had the opportunity to help at the Extension Office transplanting some of the small seedlings of this tree to larger pots. I was really depressed to see however when I returned at the end of the week to see that only one plant made it! Patrick, the Rare Fruit Growers President expected at least 70% to take. I haven’t seen him since then, and feel terrible that more did not make it. I am not sure what I did wrong, but obviously somewhere I messed up transplanting them. Anyway, I found the seeds online, to try to rectify somehow my mistake. Hopefully, they don’t kick me out. I was first introduced to the club last spring during a sale of rare fruit trees, and other plants. I bought a banana tree, two papaya trees, a mango tree, and a guava tree. All are doing fairly well, except the mango tree. We first planted it in the east side yard, and it almost completely died, so we moved it to ironically the west side which is somewhat sheltered by our neighbor’s house. It is still small, but we shaded it, and are hoping for the best. Our papaya tree is phenomenal and is doing fantastic. I am excited to see how much more it grows this summer. It has been a fun experiment, and it’s exciting to see what paradise we get out of the desert.
